Check For Updates

You get to the Check For Updates feature by clicking on Check for Updates on the HELP ribbon tab.

It is very easy to find out if you are using the latest version of the program.  In order to do this, the program needs access to the internet, so you should make sure you have an active internet connection before trying to check for updates.  If no connection is present, it should prompt you with the normal dialup connection dialogue.  However, under certain circumstances, it might just show you an error.  The easiest thing to do is to ensure you have an active connection before using the feature.  Also, firewalls can prevent this from working depending upon how they are setup.  If you use a proxy server, it is probable that it won't work at all!

When you press the menu item, it first compares your version against the version that is available for download.  If there is a newer version available, it then looks to see if the chosen language interface is available and if it is you will see a message, something like this:

You can directly download the updated version by clicking the Yes button.  The program will then download the updated file for you and it will display the usual download dialogue, like this:

You can abort the download at any time by clicking the Cancel button.

Once the file has been downloaded, you will be informed that the program will shut down and it will then automatically start the setup program for you.  At the end of the installation, you can choose the option to launch Public Talks again.

So the procedure should be pretty painless.  Here is a bit more information about how the file is downloaded.  It gets downloaded as a ZIP file to a folder called "AutoUpdate".  This folder is to be found at the location where you installed Public Talks.  It then unzips the file and runs the update.  So, if you want to backup the downloaded update to CD or something, just go to the folder where you installed Public Talks, and look in the AutoUpdate folder.  This is where the downloaded files will be.
