|The Transfer menu items can be found by clicking on the File menu.|
There could be several reasons why you might want to transfer the program settings from one computer to another. Whatever the reason, use these menu items to do it. The program creates a Transfer Archive (ZIP file) to achieve this goal. This is what the transfer archive contains:
Public Talks.MDB (the main program
Scripts Folder (your custom report scripts - if any)
It should be understood that this facility transfers the settings across to another PC. It does not merge the settings. When you restore the archive onto the target PC, the database will be replaced, as will the custom reports and registry settings.
Below you can find more information about the transfer facility:
|Transfer to another
Select this menu item when you want to create a transfer archive. You can then use this archive on another PC and restore the program settings from it. When you select the menu item, it displays the usual file selection dialogue box for you to specify a new transfer archive. Make sure you know where you are saving it, because you will have to then copy that file onto a CD, or email it, or use whatever means available to you to get it from you PC across to the other one. The easiest way would be to save the archive directly onto a floppy disk. You could then just take the disk across to the other PC and use it.
If you choose the floppy disk drive as the place to create the transfer archive, then the archive is created as a "spanned disk" archive. This means, that it will use more than one disk if necessary in order to create the transfer archive. If you have a very large database, and / or existing data on the floppy disks, then it is possible that it will need to span across more than one disk. If you end up spanning disks, make sure you clearly label each disk, eg: Disk 1 of XX where XX is the total number of disks. Note that it will still ask for disk 1, even though the disk might already be in the drive.
You will be informed when the transfer archive has been created.
|Transfer from another PC
Use this menu item to restore the settings from an existing transfer archive. The transfer archive MUST have been created by the Public Talks Software, it will not work with your own ZIP files.
When you select the menu item, you are shown the usual file dialogue to select the transfer archive to restore. If the archive is on several floppy disks, then make sure you put in the first disk in the set.
You are then asked to confirm that you want to proceed with the transfer. All replaced files are sent to the recycle bin during the transfer procedure. So whilst the operation can't be reversed, the legacy data files should still be available in the recycle bin.
When the archive has been restored, the program will need to close down and restart for the changes to the settings and database to take effect. You will be prompted about this, and it will all be done automatically for you.
